The theatre, founded in Ostberlin in 1990, was inspired by Orpheus, the Greek poet, singer and traveller between worlds. It came into being as a symbol of the intellectual awakening in the G.D.R. which ran parallel to the breakdown in government. In the meantime, it has become one of the oldest and most impressive alternative theatres in the city and one of the liveliest theatres altogether. Performances take place in a studio, which is not very large, on the ground floor of a factory in the courtyard of the Schoko-Laden (Chocolate Shop) in the Ackerstrasse. For reasons of space and capacity considerations, the room given to the audience of about fifty varies in size and appearance according to the current stage setting. The proximity of the actors, the group's "Bewegungstheater" (Expressive Theatre) which surges vehemently to the edge of exhaustion and the power of their voices, sometimes soothing, sometimes tortured, is breathtaking and demands a lot of energy from the spectator. If you can stand firm, and are not put off by the grey dilaphidated courtyard, you can experience some thrilling fast and aggressive theatre that ignores the awkward "as if" situation of theatrical art. In the ten years since it was founded, the ensemble has put on more than 20 productions, amongst them adaptations of
Barlach, Beckett, Brecht, Buchner, Cervantes, Chekov and Müller. |
