There are entrances to the largest of the three preserved traditional Berlin market halls from Bremer Straße, Arminius-, Bugenhagen- and Jonasstraße. The Arminius hall, (previously known as Market Hall X), opened in 1891 and functions as a market hall to this day; unlike the market hall at 23-26 Ackerstrasse which, though pre- served, is now home to a supermarket. Hermann Blankenstein, who built numerous schools and market halls in brick as late as 1880 and 1890, designed both halls.
In Kreuzberg, two further examples of this impressive architecture can be found: the little-used Eisenbahnhalle (railway hall), named after its entrance in Eisenbahnstraße, and the entrance building to the former Market Hall VII at Dresdenerstraße 27, which is now a standard block of flats (and one of the most beautiful buildings in the area).
During the Second World War, five of the halls were completely destroyed while a further six were partially damaged. The Arminius hall was the least damaged. The pavillon-like glass structure over the main entrance and the wonderful rounded and arched arcades have been destroyed, yet following the costly restoration in the late eighties, the market hall is now a listed building. With its relaxed shopping ambience, it has taken up its place as one of the most pleasant traditional Berlin halls. |
